Background of the Study

Geriatric care is increasingly recognized as a critical component of healthcare systems, especially as populations around the world, including Katsina State, experience aging demographics. However, the effective delivery of geriatric care is hindered by a variety of barriers, including limited healthcare resources, inadequate training for healthcare providers, cultural attitudes towards aging, and insufficient infrastructure. These barriers can result in suboptimal care for elderly patients, which may lead to poor health outcomes such as increased morbidity and mortality (Okorie et al., 2024). The situation is further complicated by the high burden of chronic diseases, mental health issues, and frailty among the elderly population in Katsina State. Addressing these barriers is essential to improving the quality of life and healthcare outcomes for elderly individuals in the region.

This study aims to investigate the various barriers that hinder effective geriatric care in Katsina State, focusing on the perspectives of healthcare providers, patients, and their families. Understanding these barriers is essential for developing targeted interventions that will improve the care of elderly individuals.

Statement of the Problem

Despite the growing need for geriatric care in Katsina State, several barriers hinder the delivery of quality healthcare to elderly individuals. These barriers include lack of specialized healthcare facilities, limited access to healthcare professionals trained in geriatrics, and cultural attitudes that undervalue elderly care. Furthermore, resource constraints and inadequate healthcare policies further exacerbate these issues, leading to compromised care for elderly patients. This study seeks to explore and analyze these barriers to inform strategies that could enhance geriatric care in Katsina State.

Objectives of the Study

  1. To identify the barriers to effective geriatric care in Katsina State.

  2. To explore how these barriers impact the quality of care provided to elderly patients in Katsina State.

  3. To recommend strategies to overcome these barriers and improve geriatric care in Katsina State.

Research Questions

  1. What are the main barriers to effective geriatric care in Katsina State?

  2. How do these barriers affect the quality of care provided to elderly patients in Katsina State?

  3. What strategies can be implemented to overcome these barriers and improve geriatric care in Katsina State?

Research Hypotheses

  1. There are significant barriers to effective geriatric care in Katsina State.

  2. These barriers negatively impact the quality of care for elderly patients in Katsina State.

  3. Overcoming the identified barriers will lead to improved geriatric care in Katsina State.

Scope and Limitations of the Study

This study will focus on geriatric care in both rural and urban settings in Katsina State, specifically examining the barriers faced by healthcare providers and elderly patients. Limitations include the potential difficulty in accessing elderly patients in remote areas and the subjective nature of reporting barriers by healthcare workers.

Definitions of Terms

  • Geriatric Care: Healthcare services and interventions tailored specifically to the needs of elderly individuals, including disease prevention, chronic disease management, and rehabilitation.

  • Barriers: Obstacles or challenges that prevent the effective delivery of healthcare services.

  • Elderly: Individuals aged 65 and older, who typically have more complex health needs due to aging.
